Agricultural College of the State of Montana
The Agricultural College of the State of Montana opened its doors in 1893 and provided a chance to working families in Montana to earn a higher education. The college was originally named the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station, which was created under the Hatch Act of 1887. The university opened its doors to working families by offering tuition that cost just $10 a year. Students received an education focused on the management of agricultural operations and other related sciences.

Dr. William Tietz, D2L MSU Bozeman, served as president of Montana State University from 1977 until 1990. He was known for his research-oriented vision, intellectual energy, and ability to weigh risks. He also had the ability to set and implement new standards.
The university was named after him. A native of Gallatin, Montana, Tietz earned a bachelor’s degree from MSU. He also holds a master’s degree from the University of Washington. The Gallatin College Programs at MSU Bozeman was previously known as the MSU Great Falls College of Technology in Bozeman. It was located away from the main campus, but moved in 2010 to Hamilton Hall, the campus center. The college was founded as a two-year campus, and has grown from a few hundred students in fall 2010 to more than eight hundred students in fall 2019. A few years later, the university leased space from an off-campus high school and a commercial building.
The university celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2018. Events on 16-17 Feb included family activities, music, fireworks, and speeches honoring the university’s history. The university also unveiled a statue of Abraham Lincoln created by Bozeman-area artist Jim Dolan. The statue was unveiled in a ceremony celebrating Lincoln’s contributions to land-grant universities.

McIntosh
Carl McIntosh is the eighth president of MSU, having previously served as president of California State University, Long Beach. He brought a consultative style to the university, which had a poor fiscal situation at the time. The state was entering a decade of recession, and its higher education system was too large. In addition, women faculty and staff were suing the university over gender discrimination.
In 1887, Montana State University opened with five male and three female students. The first classes were held at a county high school, but later moved to the Bozeman Academy. Many students were forced to transfer to the college. There were two faculty members on campus on its opening day: Acting President Luther Foster, who taught business, and Homer G. Phelps, who taught agriculture. The school also had one English teacher, Benjamin F. Maiden, who had taught English at the former Bozeman Academy.
Johnson
MSU Bozeman football coach Mike Beal has welcomed new wide receiver Marqui Johnson to his program. Johnson, a 5-foot-8 wide receiver, is a big threat both on offense and special teams. He chose Montana State over his hometown of Sacramento because of Beal’s reputation and Montana’s runner-up finish in the Football Championship Subdivision. At the beginning of fall camp, Johnson struggled to get much playing time, but he quickly moved up the depth chart and began to show signs of future success.
The School of Architecture at MSU Bozeman has been working for three years on a prototype of a 150-square-foot tiny home for the homeless in Bozeman. The first prototype was built on campus in 2018 and was lived in by a student for a year.
